Call for submissions: 2019 Writivism Rukiga Youth Prize (Deadline: 03 May)

‘A writing prize for rural-based children and youth working in Rukiga, Uganda’

The Centre for African Cultural Excellence (CACE) invites short stories from pupils and students of Rukiga in primary and secondary schools in the districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro, Rukungiri, Rubanda and Rukiga.

The Center for African Excellence (CACE) promotes Black arts and culture through the Writivism Literary Initiative. From 2012 to date, the center under this initiative, runs literary prizes, coordinates an online mentoring programme for writers, publishes annual anthologies, and curates an annual literary festival in Kampala, with outreach activities for schools, hospitals and markets under an annual theme.

The 2019 Writivism theme is “UnBreakable Bonds”. Throughout the year, the Writivism programme seeks to shine light on the unbreakability of the bonds between the rural and urban in our contemporary society, between writing in Rukiga and creative work in English, and between youth and adults. A new prize has been introduced to celebrate the unbreakability of these bonds.

The new prize focusses on youth who study in rural areas and write in Rukiga.

The team invites submissions from pupils and students attending the above schools, to the 2019 Writivism Youth Prize. Submissions are open until May 3, 2019.

The new prize includes school fees for one term (third term for 2019) for the two winning young writers in the primary and secondary school categories, sponsorship to attend the annual Writivism festival between 15 – 18 August 2019 in Kampala, publication and translation into English, and three copies of the annual Writivism anthology for the six shortlisted writers in both categories.

The prize will be judged by Prof. Manuel Muranga (Chairperson of the judges’ panel) assisted by Ms. Mwesigire Perpetua and Ms. Praise Nabimanya Kayongwe.
