Print Culture and Publishing in Africa is a one-day colloquium taking place at Oxford Brookes University on Tuesday 13th September 2016 from 9.00am-6.00pm at Headington Hill Hall, Headington Hill Campus Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, OX3 0BT. It examines the publishing, dissemination and reception of the book and journal in Africa from a broad historical perspective.

Themes that will be investigated include:

• The role of the publisher in African literature and culture:  how control over the production and circulation of books has shaped literary and cultural development.

• The formation of reading publics and the impact of reading cultures

• The booktrade in Africa at pivotal periods in its history, addressing the literary, political, ideological and economic dimensions of this trade

• Print culture and publishing archives, analysing methodological issues and ways of investigating commercial and colonial archives.

Confirmed speakers are: David Johnson (Open University); Anna-Katherina Krueger (University of Munich); Elizabeth Le Roux (University of Pretoria); Alistair McCleery (Napier University); Peter McDonald (University of Oxford); Ranka Primorac (University of Southampton); Jane Potter (Oxford Brookes University); Janet Remmington (University of York); Corinne Sandwith (University of Pretoria); Brian Willan (Rhodes University) and Caroline Davis (Oxford Brookes University).

This event is part of the British Academy funded project Print Culture and Publishing in South Africa: a research partnership between Oxford Brookes University and the University of Pretoria.
