The School of English and the Sussex Africa Centre Postgraduate Committee invite you to

the 3rd African Popular Cultures Workshop at the University of Sussex

Monday 31st March 2014, 11.00am – 6.30pm

with Professor Karin Barber (University of Birmingham), Professor Stephanie Newell (University of Sussex), Dr Ranka Primorac (University of Southampton), Dr Paulo Farias (University of Birmingham), Billy Kahora (Kwani Trust), and poet Inua Ellams

featuring a plenary lecture, film screening, poetry performance, an interactive exhibition of video, audio and text – all with opportunities for Q&A, panel discussion and book launch.

All are welcome to attend the full or any part of the day’s events.

11.00am-1.30pm in English Social Space (B274), Arts B
Screening of ‘Nairobi Half Life’ (2012) followed by a Q&A with writer Billy Kahora

2.15pm-3.15pm in English Social Space (B274), Arts B
Poetry performance by Inua Ellams followed by Q&A

From 3.30pm we will move to the Creativity Zone for an interactive exhibition hosted by the Sussex Africa Centre ‘Emerging Research Landscapes III – into Public Space’ and events to launch Stephanie Newell and Ono Okome’s edited collection ‘Popular Culture in Africa: the Episteme of the Everyday’ (Routledge, 2013)

3.30pm-4.15pm in the Creativity Zone
An immersive and interactive exhibition of objects, video, image and text, showcasing new research crossing public and popular spaces by doctoral students within the Sussex Africa Centre. The exhibition will also showcase video, image and text from Kwani Trust and Inua Ellams.

4.15pm-5.00pm in the Creativity Zone
Plenary Lecture by Professor Karin Barber ‘Popular Culture in Africa: Defining Questions’

5.00pm-6.30pm in the Creativity Zone
Roundtable on African popular culture and public space with Professor Karin Barber (University of Birmingham), Professor Stephanie Newell (University of Sussex), Dr Ranka Primorac (University of Southampton), Dr Paulo Farias (University of Birmingham), Billy Kahora (Kwani Trust) and poet Inua Ellams.

6.30pm onwards in the Creativity Zone
Music and drinks to celebrate the launch of Stephanie Newell and Ono Okome’s ‘Popular Culture in Africa: the Episteme of the Everyday’ (Routledge, 2013)
