Fully funded by the University of Bristol, this 8-week course requires you to have no previous qualifications.

Write your World with Billy Kahora
The short story is an excellent form for writing your world –this could be either your street, neighbourhood, town, city or even county, region or country. The short story also allows you to explore your imagination beyond what you observe around you.

This course will rely on short fiction from Bristol in addition to examples from the Caribbean and the African continent to help participants apply these techniques.

Run by a university tutor from the University of Bristol’s English Department, this course is designed to be an enjoyable, confidence-building experience.

The 8-week course explores the possibilities of telling the story of your world by learning the techniques of the short story and applying them to your imagination and observations. These include the basic elements of short fiction: plot, point of view, setting and description and characterisation. By enrolling on this course, students will learn how to write a short story based on experiences of their worlds and their imagination.

Billy Kahora
The sessions will be led by Billy Kahora, a Kenyan writer and academic, who is a lecturer in Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Bristol. He is the author of the non-fiction novella titled The True Story Of David Munyakei and has twice been shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing. He is also Managing Editor of Kenya’s leading literary publisher, Kwani Trust, and is a judge for this year’s Bristol Short Story Prize. The Cape Cod Bicycle War and Other Stories, his short story collection, will be out later this year.

When and Where?
Write your World runs on 8 Wednesday evenings 6.30pm to 8.30pm, starting February 2019 with breaks for half-term and Easter.Classes will take place in St Pauls Learning Centre.

This course is full funded by the University of Bristol (free of charge to attendees).

On successful completion, students will be presented with a letter of recognition from the University. Support will be available to apply for our new Creative Writing MA.
