Incisive, mysterious, surprising: the short story is addictive to writers. Discover your own approach in this six-week course with Nigerian-British author Irenosen Okojie.

Explore your voice through practical exercises, interactive challenges and the study of fiction by the greatest short story writers. This course is open to all abilities. A willingness to learn with and from other participants with varied levels of experience is essential.

Okojie’s debut novel Butterfly Fish won a Betty Trask award, and her short story collection Speak Gigantular was shortlisted for multiple awards. Her work has been published internationally by publications including The New York Times, The Guardian and The Huffington Post.

How can we use the ambiguity of memory to generate compelling ideas and narratives?

Session 2: Developing strong characters
Divergent female voices, creating unforgettable characters who leap off the page.

The art of structure, mapping the narrative arc of a story.

Session 5: Playing with form
What’s a story anyway? Exploring form and writers dismantling notions of how a story is presented.

Session 6: Craft, confidence-building and possible guest speaker Q&A
Small worlds, we look at how the transformative power of short fiction equips the writer.
