aquotesCo-directed by performance artist and producer Spoek Mathambo, this documentary aims to explore, express, and interrogate South Africa’s cultural landscape. A chief vehicle of this exploration is electronic music, a staple of South African popular culture. The film engages with a potent range of pioneers sculpting the sounds of things to come. We swim in the sounds of deep house, glitch hop, sghubu sapitori, durban qhum, dubstep and shangaan electro.

The film features an exciting range of emerging electronic music artists from various South African cities including Aero Manyelo; Black Coffee; Christian Tiger School; Felix Laband; John Wizards; Krushed & Sorted; Machepies; Markus Wormstorm; Mix & Blend; DJ Mujava; Naked Boys; Nozinja; Okmalumkoolkat; Panyaza; Rude Boyz; Sibot; DJ Spoko; Zaki Ibrahim and many more.

This screening is part of ‘South Africa at 20: The Freedom Tour’ – a collaboration between the four African film festivals in the UK – Cambridge African Film Festival, Film Africa in London, Afrika Eye in Bristol, Watch-Africa in Wales, and Africa in Motion in Scotland on a UK-wide tour taking the best of South African cinema to locations across the UK from October 2014 to April 2015, in celebration of 20 years of democracy and freedom. The tour is supported by the British Film Institute’s Programming Development Fund, awarding funds from The National Lottery. The tour is organised as part of the South African Season in the United Kingdom 2014 & 2015. The SA-UK Seasons is a partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa, and the British Council.
