Writing South Africa Now is the UK’s foremost annual colloquium on South African literature. Now in its third year, WSAN promotes international dialogue on South African culture and seeks to connect graduates, early-career researchers and senior academics working in this field. This year we are teaming up with the Southern African Poetry Project (ZAPP) for a special two-day event to be held at the University of Cambridge on 26-27 June 2015.

Like the Writing South Africa Now (WSAN) collective, the Southern African Poetry Project (ZAPP) was launched in 2013. It is based on a collaboration between the Centre for Commonwealth Education at Cambridge and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and aims to develop research on Southern African poetry, and support its teaching in secondary schools in the UK and South Africa.

This year’s event is an exciting opportunity to build on the collaborative spirit of the first two WSAN colloquia, to think about the ways in which research on South African literature relates to other disciplines, and to consider the social reach of our work as scholars. Papers from the WSAN presenters will be given in conjunction with ZAPP talks and generous time will be allocated for discussion.

We welcome papers on any aspect of South African textual and literary cultures. Please submit abstracts of up to 300 words for 20 minute papers, one-page CVs, and panel suggestions (optional) to the conveners, Alice Meyer and Jennifer Upton, at writingsouthafricanow@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is 15 April 2015.

Writing South Africa Now invites everyone with an interest in South African writing to attend.
