Conferences

Extended call for abstracts from MENAWA (Middle East, North Africa, Western Asia) reading group based at Lancaster University (UK) for an online conference in June.

Deadline February 28

The African Centre for Cities will be hosting a three-day conference entitled “African Infrastructural Futures: Urban research, debates and priorities”, from 18-20 October 2022.

Deadline date for abstract submission: 31 March 2022

Workshops

A call for proposals invited for the first event of the AHRC-funded Textual Worlds of South-Eastern Africa – comprising Ranka Primorac (University of Southampton), Grace Musila (University of the Witswatersrand), Brendon Nicholls (University of Leeds), and Lynda Spencer (Rhodes University).

Titled “Disobedient Forms”, the event is a 2 day workshop at the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study in South Africa on the weekend of 9-10th April, with, if circs allow, fully-funded in-person participation.

Expressions of interest and 300-word abstracts are due before 28 February

For those registered or interested in the African Studies Association Africa 4th Biennial Conference – still time to apply for their pre-conference workshops offerings.

Applicants should prepare and submit the required info and documents by
14 February 202(see links below + funding opp. for registration costs)

The ASAA2022 pre-conference workshops take place 11–12 April 2022.

Workshop participants have to register or be registered for the ASSA2022 Conference. Most workshops are limited in numbers, so make sure to submit your application and documentation as indicated.

Applications are also open for funded scholarships to help with registration costs for the conference –

Tenure track opportunity – Dept of History, University of Western Ontario.

The deadline for receipt of applications is March 31 “or until the position is filled”.

 

PhD studentships

Deadline upcoming for this call for PHD studentship applications, part of an interdisciplinary and international research project “The (In)Audible Past”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and carried out in cooperation with the South African universities of Rhodes, Makhanda, and Fort Hare, East London. The PhD research project will need to be at the interface of media studies (with a focus on sound studies) and historical studies (with a focus on African studies/postcolonial studies).

Inivitations open for applications to a fully funded joint PhD studentship at Unis Leiden and Edinburgh on religion & mobility in Africa. Open to all.

The British Institute in East Africa’s call for applications for their annual thematic research grants is open:

The BIEA invites applications for funding for original research projects in any discipline in the humanities and social sciences in eastern Africa and beyond….

We particularly welcome applications from researchers or research teams who have limited access to other sources of funds. Priority is given to researchers based in the UK or Eastern Africa, and to projects which engage with one or more of the following BIEA research themes (see https://biea.ac.uk/researchpartners/ for further information about each theme)

Just under a week to go before Flyway journal’s special issue submissions window closes, guest edited by Romeo Oriogun, closes – through to February 15.

First call out from Olúmọ Review, a biannual online poetry journal. Native to Ogun state, Olúmọ Review is committed to publishing “quality poems in all forms, modes, movements from Nigeria & beyond.”

With their window opening from February 11th, Poetic Africa‘s call for submissions for their May edition is on the theme “MOTHER”.

With recently announced exciting news of their Isele Prizes,  a new initiative that seeks to reward their contributors —short stories, poetry, and nonfiction— Isele magazine are taking submissions for their next quarterly issue, the Reborn Issue:

One could argue that we are all inventors. So often we don new masks, adapting and evolving, inventing and reinventing ourselves, sometimes to our benefit, other times to our detriment. 

Here at Isele Magazine, we are fascinated with the concept of re-invention. For this Quarterly issue, we seek submissions that re-tell folktales or reinvent conventional ideas in new and surprising ways.

Better Than Starbucks – poetry and fiction journal, while not solely Africa-focused, the journal has had a specific section in each issue dedicated to African Poetry since 2017 (then expanded and created for International poets as well). All writers featured receive an honorarium of $20.

For the May 2022 issue, they are reading until late/end of March.

South African scriptwriters of 18 and older – the organisers of the Distell National Playwright competition are once again calling for entries accepting previously unpublished or commercially unproduced work in any of the country’s official languages from now until 28 February 2022.

Short story writers – ‘Imagine 2200’ cli-fi for the future – 2nd annual short story contest from @grist, open to writers in English anywhere in the world.

Open for submissions until 5 May

The Wasafiri New Writing prize window is open (small entry fee in £).

Until 30 June

Exceptionally international in scope, the prize supports writers who have not yet published a book-length work, with no limits on age, gender, nationality, or background. The winners of each category will receive a £1,000 cash prize and publication, and will be published in Wasafiri’s print magazine. Shortlisted writers will have their work published on Wasafiris website.

And a reminder that the James Currey Prize for African Literature is open for submissions until April 2022.

Writers are to submit at most two full manuscripts of fiction related to the African experience to submissions@jamescurreyprize.com, on or before the 3rd of April, 2022.
