Event: Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi in conversation (London & Manchester)

Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi will be talking about her new collection of short stories, Manchester Happened, tonight in Waterstones, Piccadilly. Jennifer will also be in Manchester in June!

Published by ONEWORLD on 23 May 2019, the book is a dazzling short story collection from the acclaimed author of KINTU, winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize 2014 and the Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction 2018

Manchester Happened is a powerful collection of short stories about the experience of immigration from the internationally acclaimed author of Kintu. Full of empathy and humour, these vibrant stories move between Manchester and Kampala, reimagining the journey of Ugandans who choose to make England their home.

The collection includes ‘Let’s Tell This Story Properly’ winner of the 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize and ‘She is our Stupid’ which was broadcast recently on BBC Radio 4.

Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, a Ugandan novelist and short story writer, has a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University. Her first novel, KINTU (Oneworld, 2018), won the Kwani? Manuscript Project in 2013 and was longlisted for the Etisalat Prize in 2014. Her short story, Let’s Tell this Story Properly, won the 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. In 2018 Jennifer was awarded the prestigious Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction to support her writing. She is a judge of this year’s Commonwealth Short Story Prize to be announced on 9 July. Jennifer lives in Manchester with her husband and son, and lectures in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Jennifer will be talking about Manchester Happened in Nairobi and Kampala in early May and at the following events in the UK :
